Choosing between 2 Stroke or 4 Stroke

With the emissions control legislation coming into effect in 2006 and 2008 all new engines will have to comply with the standards set by the Evironmental Protection Agency. Since 2 stroke engines are traditionally less environmentally friendly than 4 stroke engines there will be a very strong trend to 4 strokes. But there are some very real advantages in 2 strokes and manufacturers have been developing 2 stroke technology to match the the advantages of 4 strokes, so the choice is not easy and it depends a lot on engine size and the type of boating you plan to do. The argument for 2 strokes is as follows
- They are usually a lot lighter, which is an advantage for you carrying the engine and an advantage in terms of power to weight ratio. Since boats have engine weight limits it may mean that your choice is between a 75hp 4 stroke or a 90hp 2 stroke.
- They are somewhat easier to handle. 2 strokes are quite forgiving in terms of handling but 4 strokes are best kept upright and can only be laid down one particular way. This sounds easy but the day will come when someone else does this for you and gets it wrong…with disastrous consequences!
- 2 stroke offers faster acceleration, which is great if you want to water ski or you are a speed freak!
- 2 stroke engines are usually less expensive to service.
- Manufacturers have kept pace with the challenge and have developed more fuel efficient, quieter, cleaner 2 strokes. Evinrude has developed its outstanding Ficht Direct Injection technology in its range of 2 stroke engines, starting at 75hp. These engines offer the advantages of both 2 and 4 stroke engines and are very environmentally friendly. The argument for 4 strokes is as follows
- 4 stroke engines tend to be smoother, quieter, cleaner and more fuel efficient. If you want to fish at slow speeds and plan comfortable rather than fast and furious family outings then you will certainly appreciate 4 stroke better
- 4 stroke engines don't require pre-mixing of the oil and fuel, which can be bothersome in 2 strokes but remember you have to keep the oil level within limits, just the same as a car engine
